I had resolved

Not to call Ronnye again

Since she hadn't returned

My previous two calls

This wasn't like her,

But she must have had her reasons

If she was brushing me off,

I wanted to know why --

Maybe there had been

Some misunderstanding

Which could be resolved

But it kept bugging me

And after a few days

I finally decided to call

Until I got through to her --

I was not going to leave a message

If she didn't answer,

And face any more humiliation

Of unreturned calls --

I wanted to talk to her

And confront her with my questions

So, I keyed in her number,

But quite quickly,

And got silence instead of ringing,

So I pressed the disconnect button

So that I could try again

But, as I was about to

Begin keying digits again

I heard a feminine voice

Suspiciously like Ronnye's

Say "Michael?" through the phone

It was Ronnye

We still can't figure out

The exact mechanics

Of what happened,

But she had called me

As I was calling her

Neither of us heard our phone ring,

But Ronnye heard the click

When I tried disconnecting --

You figure it out

She apologized for not calling sooner --

She'd extended her vacation

And was now cramming for her bar exam

I don't know if she'd also been peeved --

I didn't press her --

I was just glad that we were reconnected
